Reaching Your Horizon (RYH)

Our staff is made up of caring and professionally trained adults who serve as role models and mentors, and work closely with participants in a structured program while they strive to be contributing members in society.

Reaching Your Horizon has been designed first to enable the participants to discover and utilize effective asset based skills and the knowledge of learning they already possess.  In effect, we will meet participants where they are in order to assist them in developing other skills they need to increase their fullest capacity.

Secondly, the program will affirm successes and strengths that all the participants already possess in order to alter their self-esteem so that learning with confidence can be encouraged.  These fundamental approaches will empower our participants to discern their assets, as well as the benefits of character building and learning.

In short, we meet the participants’ developmental needs by providing the appropriate tools that will successfully enable the participant to move from one point to another.  This also requires that participants actively involve themselves in the decision making process; establish protocol in which they are responsible and understand that they are responsible for their own progress.

Service is the core of the program and all energies are directed toward the goal of providing effective service as a comprehensive and nurturing aspect of our program.  The program is successful because our participants are respected, enlightened, and are given guidance by positive, mature individuals.

Who We Are

Reaching Your Horizon is very proud to announce that we have been selected as semi-finalists for the Echoing Green Black Male Achievement (BMA) Fellowship. RYH is among a group of social enterprises that have been selected from over 3000 submissions narrowed to a field of 87 BMA semi-finalists. We are anxiously awaiting the announcement of finalists for this outstanding honor.

The Black Male Achievement Fellowship is a fellowship program established by Open Society Foundations and Echoing Green. This program is dedicated to improving the life outcomes of black men and boys in the U.S.

Dr. Robert K. Johns is actively supportive in the empowerment of all persons. After finding a career as an entertainment consultant unfulfilling, Dr. Johns began working with the inner-city population and that is when he realized the importance of working with underrepresented populations. He has experience working as a gang outreach coordinator, as a tutor, a housing advocate for the homeless, and also as a teacher. This is what prompted him to begin working with Reaching Your Horizon. This organization embodies the principles of loyalty, knowledge, character, and determination that Dr. Johns holds dear to his heart.
